Gwangju City Provides Living Support Funds to Basic Livelihood Security and Legal Lower-Income Households

Support of 5.075 Billion Won Total, 200,000 Won Each for 23,375 Households

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 11th that it has provided living support funds to basic livelihood security and legally lower-income households, excluding households receiving various livelihood benefits.

The recipients of the support funds were 27,339 households who continuously resided in Gwangju Metropolitan City from February 2, 2021, to the payment date and held qualifications as basic livelihood security recipients (excluding livelihood benefit recipients) and legally lower-income class. From the 9th to the 10th, ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, a total of 5.075 billion KRW was provided to 23,375 households, accounting for 93% of the total.

In particular, to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and ensure rapid payment of living support funds, the city paid 200,000 KRW per household directly to the welfare benefit accounts of the eligible households without a separate application process.

However, households receiving basic livelihood security livelihood benefits, government emergency welfare, Gwangju-type emergency welfare (Norang Horuragi), and Gwangju-type basic security system support for living expenses were excluded from this payment.

Gwangju City plans to promptly identify payment accounts and provide cash payments starting from the 15th to households that have not yet received support funds, such as those without welfare benefit accounts or those using seizure-protection accounts requiring new account identification.

Ryu Mi-su, Director of the Social Welfare Division of the city, said, “We hope this living support fund offers some comfort to citizens exhausted by COVID-19 and helps them through difficult times,” adding, “We will continue to actively prepare support measures to stabilize the lives of low-income groups.”
