[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Joe Biden announced on the 10th (local time) that he signed a new executive order to immediately sanction the military leaders involved in the Myanmar coup.
President Biden made this announcement during an unscheduled speech on the same day. He demanded that the Myanmar military relinquish power and immediately release State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and others.
Under this measure, sanctions against military personnel who led the Myanmar coup and related companies, as well as asset freezes within the United States, are expected to be implemented.
President Biden also mentioned that he requested allies, especially in the Indo-Pacific region, to cooperate in restoring democratic governance in Myanmar.
The Myanmar military staged a coup on the 1st, detaining State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint under house arrest and declaring a one-year state of emergency.
The Biden administration initially did not label the event as a coup immediately after it occurred, but a day later referred to it as a coup and announced the suspension of aid to Myanmar.
