[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The U.S. Senate has concluded a vote on the constitutionality of the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, ruling it constitutional. The impeachment trial of former President Trump has now entered the full hearing phase.
According to foreign media such as CNN, on the 9th (local time), the U.S. Senate voted that the impeachment trial of former President Trump is constitutional. Following objections from some Republican senators who argued that the impeachment trial of a former president is unconstitutional, the Senate held a vote on whether the trial complies with the Constitution, resulting in 56 votes in favor and 44 against, concluding it is constitutional. Prior to the vote, the House impeachment managers, who argued that a former president can be impeached, and Trump’s defense team, who argued otherwise, engaged in a four-hour debate.
Accordingly, the Senate’s impeachment trial has now entered the full hearing phase. The Senate began the trial by first voting on the constitutionality of the impeachment trial itself. Afterwards, both sides will be granted 16 hours each for arguments to proceed with the full hearing.
The decision on whether to impeach former President Trump is expected to be made in a vote next week. Since 17 Republican defections are required for the impeachment to pass, the likelihood of the impeachment being approved is considered low.
