Say "Mola Bogi" Instead of "Binge Watching"

On February 8, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended replacing the term "binge watching" with the Korean expression "Mola Bogi," which means watching multiple episodes at once. They also suggested "Burok Yeongsang" for "cookie video" and "Daegyu-mo Chamyeohyeong Nodongja" for "crowd worker" as Korean alternatives.

"Binge watching" refers to watching several episodes of a TV program, drama, or film series consecutively in one sitting. The selection of "Mola Bogi" as a replacement was based on survey results. In a public acceptance survey conducted from February 1 to 3 with about 1,000 participants, 97.6% of respondents answered that the term was appropriate.

"Cookie video" refers to a short video that appears after the main feature of a movie or drama has ended, often including bloopers, epilogues, or previews of sequels. A "crowd worker" is someone who participates in a company's production or service activities by providing suggestions or reviewing materials. The Ministry and the Institute decided on "Burok Yeongsang" and "Daegyu-mo Chamyeohyeong Nodongja" as replacements during the Saemalmoim (New Word Meeting) held from January 29 to 31.

The Saemalmoim is a committee that provides easy-to-understand Korean alternatives for difficult foreign neologisms before they become widespread. Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, public relations and publishing, information and communications, and media participate in this committee. The Ministry and the Institute plan to continue promoting the use of these alternatives, encouraging government agencies and media outlets to take the lead in adopting them.
