Jeonnam Police Promote Special Traffic Management During Lunar New Year Holiday

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 5th that it will implement special traffic management measures to reduce traffic congestion in anticipation of increased vehicle movement during the Lunar New Year holiday period.

This year, due to the COVID-19 situation, the number of travelers returning home and going back is expected to decrease compared to the previous year.

According to a sample survey conducted by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, about 11.22 million people are expected to travel home and 10.7 million to return, totaling approximately 20 million nationwide during the holiday period.

The police will first focus on managing places expected to be congested due to holiday preparations, such as traditional markets and large supermarkets, from the 5th to the 9th, before the Lunar New Year holiday.

Then, from the 10th to the 14th, during the holiday period, 330 police officers including traffic and local police, patrol cars, and large motorcycles, along with 115 patrol cars and motorcycles, will be deployed to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety on the routes to and from hometowns.

Additionally, to revitalize traditional markets and improve convenience for residents, parking and stopping will be allowed on roads around 61 traditional markets for 10 days from the 5th to the 14th to minimize inconvenience.

A representative from the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency urged, “We hope everyone checks traffic information in advance before departing for hometowns, inspects vehicle safety such as tire air pressure, and has a safe Lunar New Year without traffic accidents.”

Meanwhile, high-risk behaviors such as speeding and reckless driving on highways, as well as selfish driving like driving on the shoulder, will be intensively cracked down on using undercover patrol cars (3 units) and a police helicopter (1 unit). During vulnerable times for drowsy driving, alarm patrols and real-time patrols of vulnerable sections will be conducted to prevent traffic accidents.
