Ssangyong Motor Union "Sorry to the Public for Management Crisis, Government Support Urgently Needed"

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] The Ssangyong Motor labor union, which is struggling due to worsening management, has issued a statement asking the government and the public for another chance.

On the 5th, the Ssangyong Motor union stated in a statement, "We express our apologies to the public for the management crisis at Ssangyong Motor," and added, "Just as we have upheld the social agreements promised to the public for 11 consecutive years, if given another chance to survive, we will repay the public with vehicle development loved by them, like the Tivoli that opened the era of compact SUVs."

The union emphasized that government support is urgently needed for the revival of Ssangyong Motor, especially highlighting the urgent need for active support from the government and creditors to resolve the difficulties faced by partner companies on the brink of bankruptcy.

They also requested employment guarantees. The union explained that the reason they did not oppose Ssangyong Motor's application for suspension of commencement of rehabilitation proceedings (ARS system) is to maintain the total employment policy, and added that if the ongoing P-plan rehabilitation process goes well, they will fulfill their given responsibilities and roles to ensure that new investors can be implemented as soon as possible based on stable labor-management relations.

Jung Il-kwon, chairman of the Ssangyong Motor labor union, said, "Despite the application for rehabilitation proceedings after 11 years, we are responding calmly under the total employment policy framework because if labor-management conflicts surface and social conflicts arise, it could cause further wounds to the public already exhausted by COVID-19," and added, "Based on the mature labor-management relations that have practiced no labor disputes for 11 years, the labor union will exercise maximum patience and fulfill its responsibilities and roles to the fullest for the success of the sale."
