[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Samsung Electronics and LG Group ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively among companies that registered the most patents in the United States last year.
According to related industries on the 5th, Samsung Electronics ranked 2nd in the world following IBM in the United States on the list of the "Top 300 Companies and Institutions for U.S. Patent Registrations in 2020" recently announced by the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO). The total number of patents Samsung Electronics registered in the U.S. last year was 8,539, which was 896 fewer than IBM's 9,435.
LG Group registered 5,112 patents, placing 3rd. Until 2019, the IPO separately disclosed the number of patents for LG Electronics, LG Chem, LG Display, and LG Innotek, but in this announcement, it was unified under LG Group.
Besides these, Canon ranked 4th with 3,689 patents, Intel 5th with 3,284 patents, and Raytheon Technologies (3,213 patents), Huawei (3,178 patents), Microsoft (2,972 patents), TSMC (2,892 patents), and Sony (2,886 patents) were sequentially positioned within the top 10. Among other Korean companies besides Samsung Electronics and LG Group, Hyundai Motor Company ranked 21st with 1,626 patents, and SK Group ranked 43rd with 1,091 patents, both placing within the top 50.
Meanwhile, the total number of patents granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) last year was 352,469, showing less than a 1% decrease compared to 2019.
