OLED Color Gamut, More Than Twice Brighter Than LCD in Outdoor Settings
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Samsung Display announced on the 2nd that its latest smartphone organic light-emitting diode (OLED) received recognition for excellent 'outdoor visibility' from the global safety certification organization 'UL'.
This product features technology that allows letters and colors to be perceived brightly and clearly even under sunlight. Samsung Display explained, "OLED emits light by itself and expresses colors, resulting in a wide color gamut," adding, "Because it can express highly saturated colors, it achieves relatively clear image quality even outdoors where visibility is generally poor."
According to UL measurements, Samsung Display's latest OLED meets 73% of the DCI-P3 standard color gamut set by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) for 'color gamut in bright environments,' and its peak luminance (the amount of reflected light entering the eyes) exceeds 1500 nits, the highest level in the industry.
Additionally, according to Samsung Display's internal evaluation, the OLED's color gamut in bright environments decreases from 99% indoors to 73% outdoors, whereas liquid crystal displays (LCDs) drop from 78% to about 30%, showing more than twice the decline compared to OLED.
Samsung Display plans to equip its latest OLED in flagship smartphones from global manufacturers, including the Galaxy S21 Ultra announced by Samsung Electronics.
Choi Soon-ho, Executive Director and Head of the Small and Medium-sized Marketing Team at Samsung Display, stated, "In the 5G era, display performance that delivers bright and clear image quality regardless of indoor or outdoor environments is very important," and added, "Samsung OLED will provide consumers with new value as the most suitable mobile display for the 5G era."
