[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Namdong-gu, Incheon announced on the 28th that the area around Guwol Girls' Middle School in Guwol 3-dong has been developed into a 'Women’s Safety Village.'

The target area has a high proportion of single-woman households. Since February last year, the district has been promoting a safety village project applying Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to prevent various types of violence and intrusion crimes against women.

Safety mirrors that allow identification of risk factors through reflection were installed, and 'Safe Paths' where locations can be quickly identified in emergencies, as well as 'Women’s Safety Keeper Houses' near convenience stores where women can take refuge and report to the police, were designated.

Additionally, to prevent intrusion crimes, autonomous parcel lockers were installed and 'door opening sensors' were distributed.

Based on residents’ requests, bulletin boards were installed, slopes were paved and fences erected, illegal dumping prevention boxes were set up, and anti-adhesive materials for advertisements and guide signs were attached.

Notably, this project involved residents actively participating in all stages from planning to design, including day and night monitoring by the resident participation group, and forming a resident council with CPTED and gender experts, as well as police officers.

The district plans to additionally develop a safety village in Mansu 1-dong this year.

Lee Kang-ho, Mayor of Namdong-gu, stated, "This is an achievement where residents identified local issues and participated in actual solutions," adding, "We will continue to promote effective safety village projects to ensure safety for all residents, including women, children, youth, people with disabilities, and the elderly."
