Gyeongnam Province Sees 22.5% Decrease in Wage Arrears 'Despite COVID-19'

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Despite the COVID-19 crisis, the unresolved wage arrears in Gyeongsangnam-do significantly decreased last year.

According to Statistics Korea data, as of December 31 last year, the unresolved wage arrears amounted to 63.7 billion KRW for 9,169 workers.

This is a 22.5% decrease compared to 82.3 billion KRW as of December 31, 2019.

The province analyzed that the decrease in wage arrears appears to reflect the impact of government subsidies such as employment retention support funds and small business support funds.

On the other hand, due to the downturn in the shipbuilding industry, regions such as Geoje, Tongyeong, and Goseong saw an increase in wage arrears.

It was also analyzed that wage arrears increased in related industrial areas such as Sancheong, Geochang, and Hapcheon due to continued sluggish exports and consumption of agricultural and marine products.

Accordingly, the province announced that it will implement a 'Wage Arrears Resolution Plan' before the Lunar New Year holiday.

First, in cooperation with related organizations such as the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the period until February 10 will be designated as the wage arrears settlement period.

For construction and service projects commissioned by the province, the provincial accounting department will promptly respond to reports through the 'Wage Arrears Reporting Center' it operates.

The 'Ministry of Employment and Labor's Wage Arrears Worker Livelihood Support System' will be actively promoted through city and county offices and the province's support centers for non-regular workers.

Additionally, support for workers' wage arrears settlement will be provided through the 'Visiting Provincial Labor Attorney System.'
