Hyundai Motor Electric Vehicles Equipped with Samsung OLED, Strengthening Collaboration Between Both Companies

Hyundai Motor Electric Vehicles Equipped with Samsung OLED, Strengthening Collaboration Between Both Companies Hyundai Motor Ioniq 5 Teaser Image

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Samsung Display's organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display will be installed in Hyundai Motor's first dedicated electric vehicle, the Ioniq 5. Analysts say that cooperation between the two companies has been strengthening following a series of meetings last year between Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Jaeyong Lee and Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung.

According to industry sources on the 28th, Hyundai Motor will apply a new side mirror system to the Ioniq 5, which is the first to adopt the E-GMP platform dedicated to electric vehicles. While a conventional side mirror is standard, consumers can choose a side view camera instead of the side mirror.

When using the side view camera, the surrounding view captured by the camera is displayed on an interior display instead of a mirror. Samsung Display's OLED is expected to be applied to this display.

Earlier, in July last year, Audi's first electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) in Korea, the e-tron 55 quattro, was the first mass-produced car to apply such a 'virtual side mirror.' The OLED display installed in the e-tron is also a Samsung Display product.

The industry is paying attention to the strengthening cooperation between Hyundai Motor and Samsung. Until now, there had been no significant contracts between Hyundai Motor and Samsung. Samsung once entered the automotive industry and was in a competitive relationship. However, following the meeting between Vice Chairman Lee and Chairman Chung last year, expectations grew that cooperation between the two companies would increase.

In May last year, Chairman Chung visited Samsung SDI's Cheonan plant to discuss all-solid-state batteries with Vice Chairman Lee, and two months later, in July of the same year, Vice Chairman Lee returned the visit to Hyundai Motor's Namyang Research Center to explore multifaceted cooperation plans in next-generation mobility fields such as electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and urban air mobility (UAM).

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Motor Ioniq 5 is scheduled to be released sequentially starting in March in Europe, followed by Korea and the United States. The Ioniq 5 can travel over 500 km on a single charge (based on WLTP standards) and is equipped with an 800V charging system that allows 80% charging within 18 minutes when using an ultra-fast rapid charger.
