Students of Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-su) carried out gratitude activities honoring the overseas veterans of the Korean War 70 years ago.
Fifteen members of the Pukyong National University Student Peace Volunteer Group UN Supporters (Representative Choi Si-eun) delivered thank-you letters and a gratitude video to the Embassy of Belgium in Korea at the ‘70th Anniversary Commemoration Event of the Arrival of the Belgium-Luxembourg Battalion in Korea’ held on the morning of the 27th at the Westin Chosun Hotel Busan.
This 70th anniversary commemorative event was organized by the Embassy of Belgium in Korea to honor the 70th anniversary of Belgium and Luxembourg’s participation in the Korean War.
The event was attended by Woo Kyung-ha, Busan City International Relations Ambassador; Kim Ju-yong, Head of the Korean War 70th Anniversary Project Planning Group at the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs; Patrick Engelbert, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Belgium in Korea; and Heo Kang-il, Director of the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea.
Belgium and Luxembourg participated as combat support countries during the Korean War, dispatching 3,498 troops (106 killed in action) and 100 troops (2 killed in action) respectively to Korea.
Since 2009, the Pukyong National University UN Supporters, who have been conducting gratitude activities for Korean War veterans, screened a self-produced gratitude video and read thank-you letters at the event to express their appreciation to the veterans.
Choi Si-eun, a junior in the Department of History and representative of the UN Supporters, said, “I would like to express my gratitude to the veterans who risked their lives for a distant country on the other side of the globe,” adding, “When I think about whether I could have risked my life for another country, I feel humbled. I will never forget and will always remember the courage and sacrifice of the veterans.”
