[Asia Economy Reporter Haeyoung Kwon] Sung Yoon-mo, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, announced plans to expand the resident participation-type renewable energy distribution model.

On the 27th, Minister Sung visited the solar power complex and wind power demonstration site in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do, to hear on-site opinions, stating, "the government will expand the resident participation-type renewable energy distribution model where local residents participate and share power generation profits" and "we will strengthen policy support such as continuous expansion of renewable energy research and development (R&D) and infrastructure construction."

The Yeonggwang solar power complex was completed in June last year as the largest scale in Korea (100 megawatts). It has an annual power production capacity of 13 gigawatt-hours (GWh), enough to supply electricity for 62,000 households for one year. Utilizing abandoned salt fields, the solar power generation facility was established, and local residents share the operational profits.

The Yeonggwang wind test bed is a site where transmission facilities and meteorological observation towers have been built and are operated to support certification and demonstration of large and small wind turbines by domestic companies. A second-phase expansion project is underway to demonstrate large wind turbines of 5MW or more, including the 8MW offshore wind turbine under development by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and others.
