[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] LG Uplus is launching a 5G online-only plan that offers 12GB of data for around 30,000 KRW per month. As mobile carriers continue to release 5G plans in the 30,000 KRW range, price competition is intensifying.
LG Uplus announced that it will release two mid-range plans under its online-only service, the ‘5G Direct Plan,’ on the 27th. The ‘5G Direct Plan’ is an online-exclusive plan available through LG Uplus’s official online store, U+Shop. Designed for customers who do not want bundled or contract conditions, the plan removes additional services and lowers prices by more than 30% compared to existing plans.
First, the ‘5G Direct 37.5’ offers 12GB of 5G data per month at 37,500 KRW (VAT included), with speeds reduced to 1Mbps after data is used up. The ‘5G Direct 51’ provides 150GB of 5G data per month at 51,000 KRW (VAT included), with speeds reduced to 5Mbps after data is exhausted, and includes an additional 10GB of tethering data.
In line with its online-only nature, the Direct Plan also offers non-face-to-face partnership benefits. Customers receive discount coupons worth up to 3,000 KRW monthly, usable at Gmarket, Auction, Market Kurly, KakaoT, Yogiyo, GS25, GS Fresh, and more, depending on the plan they subscribe to.
The amount of discount coupons varies by plan. Subscribers to ‘5G Direct 37.5’ receive 1,000 KRW monthly, while those using ‘5G Direct 51’ get 1,500 KRW monthly. Customers of the ‘5G Direct 65,’ launched in February last year, receive coupons worth 3,000 KRW monthly. Online partnership coupons are provided once a month via text message for two years. Each coupon is valid for 30 days and can be transferred to others.
Lee Sangheon, Head of the Consumer Business Innovation Group at LG Uplus, said, “If the online-only plans introduced proactively last year were at the level of tapping the market (pre-demand survey), the establishment of these new plans expresses our determination to actively target the non-face-to-face market. We can now offer a total of 13 types of 5G plans both online and offline to customers. We will continue to diversify services to expand customers’ 5G choices.”
