[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on the 26th that nine traditional hanok sites (seven private hanoks and two village units), the second highest number nationwide, were selected in the '2021 Traditional Hanok Branding Project' competition hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The 'Traditional Hanok Branding Project' is a project in which individuals and village units designated as hanok experience businesses are invited to apply and selected annually by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Selected businesses operate various themed experience programs such as traditional food, crafts, hanbok, traditional etiquette, and old house music performances.

Selected individual houses receive subsidies of up to 75 million KRW per site (30 million KRW national funds, 30 million KRW local funds, 15 million KRW self-payment), and village units receive up to 90 million KRW (36 million KRW national funds, 54 million KRW local funds).

So far, the number of registered hanok experience businesses in Gyeongbuk Province has steadily increased every year, reaching about 400 sites as of the end of 2020. Although the number of domestic and international visitors to hanok experiences declined due to the impact of COVID-19 last year, it is expected that travelers visiting traditional hanoks will steadily increase once the COVID-19 situation improves.

Kim Sang-cheol, Director of the Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, "Our province has the largest number of hanok experience businesses nationwide, with about 400 designated sites across the region," adding, "We will strictly adhere to COVID-19 prevention guidelines and actively support tourists to create meaningful and enjoyable memories in our local hanoks."
