[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-eun] A story about a Chinese female student who underwent more than 100 plastic surgeries over three years from age 13 to 16 has become a hot topic. The student is suffering from serious aftereffects such as vision and memory decline but stated that she plans to continue having plastic surgeries in the future.
According to the Japanese publisher Kodansha's online magazine "Curie Japon" on the 25th, the 16-year-old female student "Zhou Chuna" reportedly had her first plastic surgery at age 13 and has undergone over 100 full-body plastic surgeries in the past three years. The amount she spent on plastic surgery reached 4 million yuan (approximately 680.48 million KRW).
Last year, she also released a "Plastic Surgery Diary" introducing her plastic surgery experiences. "Plastic surgery" in Chinese is called "Zheng Yong." Additionally, she gained the title of "China's youngest and most frequent plastic surgery enthusiast," with over 310,000 followers on social media platforms.
Zhou Chuna reportedly started plastic surgery after being hurt by boys who gave her humiliating nicknames and belittled her appearance during her childhood. She repeatedly underwent full-body plastic surgeries including eyelid incisions, nose surgery with ear cartilage grafts, and breast augmentation through autologous fat injections. To resemble her childhood idol, the Barbie doll, she had more than 15 eye surgeries alone. She has also continuously undergone annual checkups and maintenance surgeries to preserve the results.

However, she has faced serious side effects from the plastic surgeries. Repeated anesthesia during surgeries has worsened her memory decline symptoms, and she suffers from reduced skin elasticity and large surgical scars as severe aftereffects. Moreover, although she should avoid wearing contact lenses for at least one month after eye surgery, she wore lenses and heavy eye makeup, which significantly worsened her vision.
Zhou Chuna's parents want her to stop the surgeries, but she insists, "If you cannot solve my appearance concerns, just agree to the surgeries," forcing them to reluctantly consent. There were even cases where doctors refused to perform surgeries, but she remains determined to continue. Zhou Chuna said, "I cannot stop plastic surgery now," and added, "Even after repeated surgeries, something always looks unnatural, so when I finish, I will be more beautiful than now."
Meanwhile, China reportedly has 20 million plastic surgery patients annually. About 80% of those receiving plastic surgery are under 30 years old, and an average of 20,000 people per year complain of side effects such as skin necrosis from plastic surgeries.
