Yeongdeungpo-gu Provides 500,000 KRW Childbirth Support Fund Per Disabled Family with Newborns

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) will provide childbirth support funds to families with disabilities who have newborns starting this year.

This childbirth support fund is based on the "Ordinance on Childbirth Support Funds for Families with Disabilities in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul," and targets families with disabilities who have given birth to a newborn.

The support is provided to all families with disabilities regardless of disability grade or type, and the support amount is 500,000 KRW per newborn.

The eligibility requirement is that the family must have been registered residents of Yeongdeungpo-gu for at least one year prior to the birth date. If the residence period is less than one year, the support can be received once one year has passed from the application date.

Support is also provided in cases of miscarriage or stillbirth, and it can be received in conjunction with the childbirth encouragement fund that has been supported by the district since 2008 under the "Ordinance on Childbirth Encouragement Funds in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul."

Currently, the district provides childbirth encouragement funds to residents who have lived in the district for more than one year: 100,000 KRW for the first child, 500,000 KRW for the second child, 3,000,000 KRW for the third child, and 5,000,000 KRW for the fourth child and beyond.

Accordingly, if a family with disabilities has lived in Yeongdeungpo-gu for more than one year and gives birth, they will receive a total of 600,000 KRW for the first child, combining the childbirth support fund of 500,000 KRW and the childbirth encouragement fund of 100,000 KRW.

For the second child, the total support is 1,600,000 KRW; for the third child, 5,100,000 KRW; and if they give birth up to the fourth child in Yeongdeungpo-gu, they will receive a total of 10,600,000 KRW.

Applications for the childbirth support fund must be submitted in person at the local community service center of the resident registration address within one year after the newborn’s birth. Applicants must bring their ID card, welfare card (disability certificate), a copy of a bankbook in their name, and one copy of the family relation certificate.

The district established this childbirth support fund policy considering that families with disabilities bear a greater practical burden in childcare compared to general families. Furthermore, the district will continue to strive to develop and support various welfare systems for residents with disabilities to improve their quality of life.

For more details about the childbirth support fund for families with disabilities, contact the community service centers in each neighborhood of Yeongdeungpo-gu or the Social Welfare Division (☎2670-4072).

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “We have initiated the childbirth support fund to ensure that physical disabilities do not restrict the basic rights of childbirth and childcare,” and added, “We will work hard to establish support measures that guarantee real equality for people with disabilities and create a more open and happy Yeongdeungpo where everyone lives together.”
