Rumors of Sanders' challenge for Arkansas governor have circulated since shortly after she resigned as White House Press Secretary in 2019. Her father, Mike Huckabee, served as the 44th governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007.

Former President Trump has publicly supported Sanders, a staunch loyalist, in her candidacy. When Sanders left the White House, he tweeted, "I hope Sanders runs for governor of Arkansas."

Arkansas is considered a Republican stronghold, having chosen former President Trump in last year's presidential election. CNN stated, "Through Sanders' candidacy, we will be able to gauge the Republican Party's standing."
