[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dong-hyun] The new U.S. administration under Joe Biden has officially warned China to stop pressuring Taiwan.
On the 23rd (local time), the U.S. State Department issued a statement through spokesperson Ned Price, saying, "The United States is closely monitoring with concern the ongoing patterned attempts by the People's Liberation Army (PRC) of China to intimidate neighbors, including Taiwan."
The State Department added, "We urge the Chinese government to cease military, diplomatic, and economic pressure targeting Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan's democratically elected representatives."
This statement is notable as it is the first message regarding China-Taiwan relations since the Biden administration took office.
The State Department also emphasized, "We will support allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region to promote shared prosperity, security, and values, which includes deepening our relationship with Taiwan, a democracy."
Meanwhile, China's military threats against Taiwan intensified during the Trump administration and have continued since the Biden administration took office.
