We Will Change It!... Nowon-gu Child Abuse Prevention Education Program Operation

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) is operating a child abuse prevention education program called ‘We Will Change It’ to improve awareness of child abuse and encourage community interest.

This special lecture, held at Nowon Children’s Library, will take place online via the ZOOM platform from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on February 3rd.

The instructor will be writer and Hankyoreh reporter Ji-seon Lim.

The instructor formed an investigative planning team on child abuse, investigated the actual conditions of child abuse cases, and co-authored ‘A Late Record on Child Abuse,’ which presented concrete alternatives together with experts.

This lecture is designed to raise awareness of the reality of child abuse in our society based on field reporting experience and to stimulate social interest in preventing recurrence and establishing countermeasures.

It is expected to propose alternatives to create social systems and environments where children can grow up safely, ensuring that the public outrage over the ‘Jung-in case’ does not remain a one-time reaction.

The number of participants is limited to the first 50 applicants, and anyone residing in Nowon-gu can apply.

Applications will be accepted from the 23rd through the Nowon-gu public library website.

Meanwhile, in March 2018, the district became the first local government nationwide to establish a ‘Child Protection Specialized Agency,’ taking the lead in eradicating child abuse.

Located on the 3rd floor of the Nowon Child Welfare Center (331 Nowon-ro, Junggye-dong), the Child Protection Specialized Agency is equipped with an examination room, treatment room, counseling room, and meeting room. It is staffed by a total of 10 people, including five private experts such as case managers and clinical psychologists, as well as public officials, maintaining a 24-hour work system.

Additionally, in 2019, Nowon-gu established the city’s first ‘Shelter for Abused Children’ to protect children who have suffered abuse. Nowon-gu is the only district in Seoul that directly operates such a facility.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “Now, it is not just individuals but our society that must protect children,” adding, “We hope residents will show great interest and participate in this education program for the prevention of child abuse.”
