[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] On the 22nd, Bloomberg News, citing sources, reported that Samsung Electronics is considering investing more than 10 billion dollars (approximately 11.05 trillion won) to expand its advanced semiconductor factory in Texas, USA.

Bloomberg stated that Samsung Electronics is conducting preliminary discussions to establish a facility at its Austin plant capable of producing chips developed up to 3nm (nanometer) technology. According to sources, the expansion could begin as early as this year, with major equipment installed by 2022, and production starting in early 2023.

One source indicated that Samsung appears to be considering an investment of 10 billion dollars for this factory expansion. Bloomberg explained that since these plans are not yet finalized, they may change. Bloomberg described this expansion review as Samsung's effort to catch up with Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest foundry company and a competitor, by securing more American customers.

Multiple sources said this factory is expected to be the first in the United States to use advanced extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL), which will become the next-generation silicon standard semiconductor printing technology. Bloomberg reported that Samsung responded to an email inquiry by stating that no decision has been made yet. Previously, in October last year, Samsung Electronics purchased a site near the Austin plant measuring 1,044,088 square meters and requested development approval.
