President Moon to Send Reply to UK Prime Minister Johnson... UK PM Confirms Attendance at Korea-Hosted P4G Summit
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] British Prime Minister Boris Johnson sent a letter to President Moon Jae-in reaffirming the invitation to the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit to be held in the UK this June. Prime Minister Johnson also confirmed his attendance at the 'Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G)' summit hosted by Korea in May.
Kang Min-seok, spokesperson for the Blue House, stated during a briefing at the Chuncheon Press Center on the afternoon of the 22nd, "Prime Minister Boris Johnson sent a letter reaffirming the invitation to the G7 summit and confirming his attendance at P4G," adding, "President Moon Jae-in plans to send a reply soon."
In his letter, Prime Minister Johnson referred to the recent phone conversation with President Moon, during which they exchanged views on bilateral cooperation to overcome the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and expressed his pleasure in hosting President Moon at the G7 summit to be held in the UK this June.
A senior Blue House official explained, "Last year, Korea was invited when the United States was the chair of the G7, and being invited consecutively signifies the enhancement of Korea's international status and influence."
Prime Minister Johnson conveyed a message emphasizing the importance of reflecting Korea's voice as efforts must be focused this year on eradicating COVID-19, preventing pandemics, expanding free trade, and the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the climate agreement. In particular, by confirming participation in P4G held in Seoul, Johnson expressed expectations that it will serve as an important milestone on the way to the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties.
President Moon plans to convey his intention to actively contribute to the success of the G7 summit in his reply to Prime Minister Johnson.
Meanwhile, when asked whether Prime Minister Johnson will personally visit Korea in May, a senior Blue House official responded, "It means the British Prime Minister has confirmed attendance," and explained, "There are still diplomatic arrangements to be made regarding the issue of a direct visit to Korea."
