[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] A farm in Haenam, Jeonnam was caught illegally dumping livestock manure into the sea.
Wando Coast Guard announced on the 20th that it had caught a farm located in Namchang-ri, Bukpyeong-myeon, Haenam-gun for unauthorized discharge of livestock manure, and plans to conduct intensive crackdowns on livestock farms and aquaculture farms near the coast that could cause marine pollution until the Lunar New Year holidays in February.
Livestock manure discharged without passing through a septic tank causes livestock odor, which causes discomfort to local residents, and is known to be a cause of red tide when it flows into the sea.
A Wando Coast Guard official said, “We will strongly respond to unauthorized discharge of livestock manure based on a zero-tolerance policy, and we ask livestock farms to be vigilant and prepare self-help measures.”
Under current law, unauthorized discharge of livestock wastewater into the sea can be punished with imprisonment of up to 2 years or a fine of up to 20 million won according to the 「Act on the Management and Use of Livestock Manure」.
