[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Orion announced on the 21st that it recorded its highest monthly sales last December, breaking the common belief that summer is the peak season. This was the result of an increase in home drinking due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and the shortage crisis of the ‘Kkobuk Chip Choco Churros flavor’.
Orion’s average monthly snack sales have been highest in August over the past five years. During the same period, snack sales in December fell by 10-20% compared to August. However, last month’s snack sales recorded an unusually high monthly sales figure, which was 6% higher than in August.
The December sales of ‘Swing Chip,’ which sells best in summer, rose 15% compared to August, and the December sales of ‘Poca Chip,’ ‘Ojingeo Peanut,’ and ‘Sun of the Sun,’ known as the top three convenience store beer snacks for home drinkers, were about 18% higher than in August. ‘Kkobuk Chip’ also saw a remarkable 118% growth compared to August, as the Choco Churros flavor continued its blockbuster run.
An Orion official said, “It is a very unusual phenomenon that snacks, which have summer as their peak season, received greater love in winter, and we analyze that this is due to the significant increase in home drinkers caused by social distancing.” He added, “Also, the consecutive sell-outs of Kkobuk Chip Choco Churros flavor contributed to the sales increase.”
