Prosecutors Demand 5 Years for Former DB Group Chairman Kim Joon-gi in 'Housekeeper Sexual Assault' Case

[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The prosecution has requested a prison sentence in the appellate trial for former DB Group Chairman Kim Jun-gi, who was sentenced to probation in the first trial on charges of sexually assaulting a housekeeper.

On the 19th, at the appellate sentencing hearing for former Chairman Kim held at the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Appeals Division 1-1 (Presiding Judges Kim Jaeyoung, Song Hyeyoung, Jo Jungrae), the prosecution demanded the same five-year prison term as in the first trial.

On this day, the prosecution stated, "The defendant continuously committed crimes against the victims, with the number of incidents reaching dozens," and added, "The mental suffering experienced by the victims is considerable, and it is questionable whether he is truly remorseful."

Former Chairman Kim is accused of sexually assaulting and molesting a housekeeper who worked at his villa from February 2016 to January 2017, and molesting a secretary from February to July 2017.

Kim, who was staying in the United States for medical treatment, stepped down from his chairman position after sexual assault allegations surfaced. He evaded police investigations, but after his passport was invalidated and his name was placed on the International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO, Interpol) red notice list, he returned to Korea in October 2019 and was arrested.

In the first trial, Kim, who was indicted while in custody, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison with four years of probation, and was ordered to complete 40 hours of sexual violence treatment programs and face employment restrictions.
