[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The adoption rate of RFID food waste volume-based meters in apartment complexes in Chuncheon city is expected to rise significantly.
Chuncheon city announced on the 19th, "We plan to invest 358 million KRW this year to distribute 150 RFID units to 21 apartment complexes within Chuncheon."
According to the city, as of last year, the adoption rate of RFID food waste volume-based meters in apartment complexes in Chuncheon was 61%, with 92 out of 150 complexes equipped.
This year, with RFID food waste volume-based meters distributed to 113 complexes, the adoption rate will increase to 75%.
Following the Ministry of Environment's guidelines, the city plans to complete the distribution of RFID food waste volume-based meters in apartment complexes within Chuncheon by 2022.
The RFID food waste volume-based meter charges fees proportional to the amount of waste discharged, targeting apartment complexes, with one unit serving 60 households.
Since fees are paid according to the amount of food waste, it is highly effective in reducing food waste. It allows for immediate disposal of small amounts, which is hygienic and also improves urban aesthetics.
The city plans to hold a residents' briefing session in June to go through a deliberation process, with pilot operation possibly starting in July and full operation beginning in August.
The disposal fee is 35 KRW per 1 kg of food waste, and the billing method will be operated on a prepaid basis.
