USFK Issues 'Stay-at-Home Order' Until the 19th Amid COVID-19 Spread at Yongsan and Pyeongtaek Bases [Image source=Yonhap News]

[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] As the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) originating from the Yongsan US military base continues, the US Forces Korea has issued a 'stay-at-home order' targeting the Yongsan and Pyeongtaek bases.


According to the US Forces Korea Twitter on the 17th, the US Forces Korea Command has instructed personnel related to the Yongsan and Pyeongtaek bases to remain at home from the previous day until 11:59 PM on the 19th, except for some essential activities.


Accordingly, all personnel related to the Yongsan and Pyeongtaek bases, whether living inside or outside the bases, must stay at home except in cases of emergencies, essential mission-related activities, purchasing groceries or necessities, or taking walks within the vicinity of their residence.


In unavoidable cases, permission to go out can be obtained from a colonel-level commander or a civilian commander of equivalent rank.


According to the US Forces Korea Command, five personnel working at the Yongsan US military base?two USFK soldiers, two American civilian employees, and one Korean civilian employee?tested positive for COVID-19 on the 15th.


Since one American civilian employee was confirmed positive on the 5th at the Yongsan US military base, there have been 3 cases on the 6th, 1 on the 7th, 2 on the 11th, 7 on the 13th, 6 on the 14th, and 5 on the 15th, totaling 25 confirmed cases so far. This includes three Koreans: two civilian employees and one US military-exclusive taxi driver.


Meanwhile, as of this day, the total cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases related to US Forces Korea has been counted at 601.
