Minbyun and People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy Urge Thorough Investigation into Scatter Lab, Developer of 'Iruda', for Unauthorized Use of Personal Information

[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seok-jin] Civic groups have recently called for a thorough government investigation and punishment of Scatter Lab, the developer of the AI chatbot 'Iruda,' amid controversy over unauthorized use of personal information.

The Lawyers for a Democratic Society, People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, Progress Network Center, and Information Rights Research Institute issued a statement on the 13th, urging the Personal Information Protection Commission to conduct a thorough investigation and strict punishment of Scatter Lab, the developer of 'Iruda.'

These organizations also expressed concern that if corporate practices treating personal information not as a subject of protection but solely as an economic resource continue, it will lead to AI technology that the public cannot trust.

They further urged the establishment of legal alternatives, stating, "Ethical compliance should not rely on goodwill but requires realistic and clear legal norms to socially control AI technology."

The groups hold the position that Scatter Lab's past practice in the 'Science of Love' application?replacing consent to collect personal information with the phrase 'By logging in, you agree to the privacy policy'?violates the Personal Information Protection Act, which requires consent to be obtained for each item separately.
