North Korea continued the 8th Congress of the Workers' Party for the seventh day and held sectoral consultations on the 11th in areas such as military, industry, and agriculture, the Korean Central News Agency reported on the 12th. North Korea has concluded the 8th Congress of the Workers' Party and will hold the Supreme People's Assembly, the regular national parliament of the South, in Pyongyang on the 17th.
The Supreme People's Assembly is the highest sovereign body under the North Korean constitution, typically convening an annual regular session to amend the constitution and laws, appoint key state officials, approve the budget, and perform other roles.
On the 13th, North Korea's state media, Korean Central News Agency, announced through the "Notice on the Convening of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea" that "the 4th session of the 14th Supreme People's Assembly will be convened in Pyongyang on January 17, Juche 110 (2021)."
Considering that this Supreme People's Assembly session is held immediately after the 8th Party Congress, it is expected to take follow-up measures such as legal revisions to ratify the decisions made at the Party Congress.
Originally, North Korea had announced that the Supreme People's Assembly would be held in late this month (after the 20th), but the schedule has been moved up somewhat.
Agenda items include organizational issues, adoption of laws related to the five-year national economic development plan, the settlement of last year's national budget execution, and this year's national budget.
Registration of delegates is scheduled for the day before, on the 16th.
