[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon City announced on the 10th that it visited an eco-friendly landfill facility in Cheongju, Chungbuk, which operates a dome-shaped landfill facility to be applied to its own landfill site 'Ecoland'.

This visit is the second schedule following Namyangju Ecoland, aimed at directly inspecting the underground landfill and dome-shaped roof landfill facility, which became the model for the eco-friendly self-operated landfill promoted by the city, and finding better application methods.

The landfill in Cheongju operates by burying waste 40 meters underground and installing a 47-meter-high air dome on the surface, isolating it from the outside environment.

Incheon Mayor Park Namchun personally inspected the landfill facility and received explanations about the environmental and technical status as well as the satisfaction of nearby residents.

A representative from ESG Cheongju Co., Ltd., which installs and operates the landfill, stated, "The air dome-type waste landfill facility is an advanced eco-friendly technology landfill facility that fundamentally blocks environmental factors affecting the surroundings," adding, "Since Incheon Ecoland only landfills incineration ash and non-combustible waste, the effect of the air dome landfill facility will be maximized."

This project started in 2006 and is currently operating the fourth air dome-type waste landfill facility.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment announced standards for air dome-type or roof-type landfill facilities by promulgating the 'Installation and Management Standards for Facilities Covering the Top of Waste Landfill Facilities' through the revision of the Waste Management Act in October last year.

An official from Incheon City stated, "Landfill facilities are changing from the existing open type to a closed type," and added, "Incheon Ecoland plans to apply stricter self-imposed standards than those of the Ministry of Environment to minimize the impact on residents and the environment."
