Gyeongnam Office of Education announced on the 8th that it has produced a dictionary of Japanese colonial legacy terms titled 'Changing Japanese-style Terms in Schools Like This.'
This book was created last year to mark the 100th anniversary of the Provisional Government's establishment, aiming to eliminate the Japanese colonial legacy culture remaining in schools.
With 195 pages, it purifies 333 Japanese-style terms used in school life, educational administration, and daily life into Korean words.
After a public contest in November last year, a writing team of 10 members including Principal Kim Deok-hyun selected about 900 Japanese-style words and organized around 300 words frequently used in school settings.
Referring to 25 types of literature including materials from the National Institute of the Korean Language, it was reviewed by Professor Heo Cheol-gu of Changwon University and Son Da-jeong, a specialist reviewer for expression and notation at the National Institute of the Korean Language.
Writing committee member Kang Eun-joo said, "Although it was a difficult year due to COVID-19, working on organizing Japanese colonial legacy terms in schools was a meaningful time to reflect on our history."
Superintendent of Education Park Jong-hoon said, "I thank the writing team and departments who worked hard to publish this book, and hope it will be actively used in schools as an opportunity to change Japanese-style terms into Korean."
