[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Nosik] Namwon City, Jeonbuk, was selected as the top institution in the '2021 Social Safety Index' measurement, proving that it is the most livable area for residents.
The city announced on the 5th that Namwon ranked 6th overall in the 2021 Social Safety Index survey conducted by Sungshin Women's University Data Science Center, polling agency K-stat Research, and online panel survey company PMI, which measured 155 local governments nationwide. Among small and medium-sized cities excluding special and metropolitan cities, Namwon was recorded as the safest area.
The Social Safety Index, announced for the first time this year, was calculated based on four criteria that affect citizens' safety and anxiety: economic activity (per capita income, per capita social welfare budget, employment rate, etc.), living safety (number of security facilities, number of CCTVs, etc.), health and medical care (age-standardized mortality rate of major diseases, number of medical personnel), and residential environment (degree of housing cost burden, etc.).
The survey was conducted from October 13 to November 2 last year, targeting 18,325 samples nationwide, and included both national statistics and online surveys.
Namwon received a Social Safety Index score of 65.99 in this survey, achieving the highest score among local small and medium-sized cities except for large cities such as Yongsan-gu, Seoul, which ranked first nationwide with 71.27 points.
In particular, Namwon ranked high in detailed indicators such as living safety (4th) and health and medical care (3rd), and received good subjective scores through resident experience-based policies.
Previously, Namwon was selected as an excellent institution in the basic livelihood security field (Presidential Citation), an excellent institution for disaster management evaluation for three consecutive years (Prime Minister's Citation), and the best institution nationwide for health promotion projects.
Mayor Ihwanju of Namwon said, "Our efforts to establish a safe environment in preparation for any disaster situation and to respond and recover quickly during COVID-19 and flood damage situations, protecting the precious lives and property of citizens, seem to have contributed to the high score," adding, "We will continue to strive to make Namwon a place where all citizens can live safely and with peace of mind."
