Non-support Dominates All Ages Except 40s and 50s
Party Support: Democratic 32.7% - People Power 27.2%
Gap Between Two Parties Narrowed by 6.8%p Since Early November
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] The 'political' support rate of Seoul citizens for President Moon Jae-in was found to be below the non-support rate within the margin of error. Regarding party support, the Democratic Party of Korea maintained its lead, while the People Power Party saw a moderate increase, narrowing the gap with the Democratic Party to within the margin of error.
According to a public opinion survey conducted by Asia Economy through Win-G Korea Consulting on November 2-3, targeting 1,006 voters aged 18 and over residing in Seoul (100% mobile phone virtual numbers, automated response), 47.2% responded that they politically support President Moon, while 49.4% responded that they do not support him. The gap between support and non-support was 2.2 percentage points, within the margin of error. Compared to the first week of November last year, support decreased by 1.4 percentage points, and non-support increased by 3.2 percentage points.
By region, the northwest area showed a support rate of 51.6%, the only one among the five regions to exceed 50%. The non-support rate was 45.4%. This was followed by the southwest area (support 49.1% · non-support 47.1%), northeast area (47.1% · 49.9%), downtown area (43.8% · 56.2%), and southeast area (42.8% · 52.5%) in order of support rate. The largest gap between support and non-support was in the downtown area (Yongsan-gu, Jongno-gu, Jung-gu), where non-support led support by 12.4 percentage points.
By age group, support was dominant among those in their 40s (support 56.0% · non-support 40.5%) and 50s (54.6% · 43.1%), while non-support was dominant among those in their 20s (44.9% · 49.1%), 30s (42.5% · 54.3%), 60s (42.5% · 55.3%), and 70 and older (39.1% · 58.3%). By gender, 44.9% of men and 49.3% of women responded that they support President Moon, with women's support being relatively higher.
By party support, 90.9% of supporters of the ruling Democratic Party responded that they support President Moon, and 87.0% of supporters of the Open Democratic Party also expressed support. Conversely, 91.9% of People Power Party supporters responded that they do not support him, and 63.8% of supporters of the People Party also did not support President Moon. Among Justice Party supporters, 57.4% responded that they support President Moon, but the non-support response rate was also relatively high at 41.5%.
Regarding party support, the Democratic Party recorded 32.7%, and the People Power Party recorded 27.2%. Compared to the first week of November survey, the Democratic Party fell by 2.5 percentage points, while the People Power Party rose by 4.3 percentage points. The gap between the two parties was 5.5 percentage points, within the margin of error.
Notably, among men, the Democratic Party and the People Power Party were tied at 31.4%, while among women, the response supporting the Democratic Party (33.9%) was 10.7 percentage points higher than that supporting the People Power Party (23.2%).
By age group, the Democratic Party was dominant among those in their 20s, 40s, and 50s, while the People Power Party was dominant among those in their 60s and 70 and older. In the 30s age group, support for the two parties was at similar levels.
Support for parties other than the two major parties was as follows: People Party 7.0%, Justice Party 5.8%, and Open Democratic Party 5.2%.
This survey was conducted on November 2-3 targeting voters aged 18 and over residing in Seoul, with an overall response rate of 6.7%, totaling 1,006 respondents. The survey method was wireless ARS using 100% mobile phone virtual numbers. The sample was extracted with weighting by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population as of the end of November 2020 from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (cell weighting). The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
