Digital Transformation of Small Businesses and Traditional Markets, Reflecting Government Policy Directions
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] The Small Enterprise and Market Service (SEMAS) announced an organizational restructuring and department head personnel appointments on the 31st. This move aims to provide rapid support such as subsidies and loans to small business owners affected by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), as well as to actively implement the government's policy direction of digital expansion for small businesses and traditional markets on the ground.
Accordingly, from January 1, 2021, the organization will be restructured and operated from the previous 6 headquarters, 22 offices, and 11 teams to '7 headquarters, 23 offices, and 11 teams.'
The Management Support Headquarters was independently established, separated from the existing Planning and Management Headquarters, to support the expansion of SEMAS's work and efficient organizational management. It consists of △Management Support Office, responsible for overall management of the organization, △Information Support Office, which oversees the organization's informatization projects including the official website, policy fund online homepage, and internal systems, and △Commercial Area Analysis Office, which provides systematic commercial area information to prospective entrepreneurs and small business owners in line with the big data era.
Additionally, the Digital Innovation Headquarters established △Digital Strategy Office to formulate digital transformation strategies for small businesses and traditional markets and to strengthen the dissemination of smart store technologies for small business owners, and △Online Innovation Office to systematically support innovative small businesses, century-old stores, and the online advancement of small business owners.
To respond swiftly and support small business owners struggling due to COVID-19, the Disaster Support Headquarters will also be temporarily operated until the COVID-19 situation is resolved.
This organizational restructuring was promoted after gathering internal and external opinions and board approval, in line with the government's '2021 Economic Policy Direction' and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' 'Top 10 Core Tasks.'
Jo Bong-hwan, Chairman of SEMAS, said, "This organizational restructuring was carried out to quickly support small business owners suffering from COVID-19 and to efficiently promote digital transformation." He added, "Next year, the organization will do its best as a specialized support agency for the revitalization and growth of 6.44 million small business owners and 1,437 traditional markets."
