Statistics Korea Chief: "Harmonizing Data Security and Usability to Build K-Statistics System"

"The Fundamental Principle of Statistical Sampling is 'Ensuring Representativeness'"
"Will Implement Merit-Based Personnel... Encourage Proactive Administration"

Statistics Korea Chief: "Harmonizing Data Security and Usability to Build K-Statistics System" Ryu Geun-gwan, Commissioner of the Korea National Statistical Office, is delivering his inaugural speech at an online inauguration ceremony on the 28th.

[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] "We will create a K-Statistics system that harmonizes world-class data security and data usability."

On the 28th, Commissioner Ryu Geun-gwan expressed this ambition in his inaugural speech, stating, "Our society and economy are currently being digitized at a scale and speed no one could have imagined."

Commissioner Ryu explained, "In the data era, the government-wide Digital New Deal policy is being promoted," adding, "The value of information derived from data is increasingly important not only in terms of industrial competitiveness but also in government policies and daily life."

He continued, "Our Statistics Korea will take the lead in establishing measures that thoroughly protect personal information while enhancing the usability of data," and expressed, "We will catch both rabbits of information protection and information utilization."

Commissioner Ryu also stated, "We will transform into a demand-centered Statistics Korea rather than a supplier-centered one," and said, "The standards of 'customer service' and 'until the consumer is satisfied,' which companies naturally adopt, will be the new standards of our Statistics Korea."

As a task to be pursued during his term, Commissioner Ryu hinted at 'securing representativeness.' He mentioned, "The fundamental principle of statistical sampling is securing representativeness," and added, "Statistics that have lost representativeness are statistics that have lost value."

In particular, he emphasized, "In personnel matters, we will conduct unbiased, ability-based appointments," and said, "We will reward ability and effort. We will never make unfair personnel decisions or decisions that members cannot agree with."

He further added, "Rather than passive administration that avoids mistakes, we want to encourage making mistakes while taking on new challenges," and said, "If our Statistics Korea does not take on challenges, our society and economy, which are based on our statistics, will also stop challenging."

Commissioner Ryu urged, "In the new year, please focus only on the people and make your best efforts in your respective positions with pride in serving the people."]
