Gwangjin-gu and Sejong University Operate Small Design Pilot Project as Part of Campus Initiative... Local University Students Collaborate with Residents to Identify and Solve Community Issues
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) has promoted the ‘Small Design Pilot Project’ to solve local problems through design.
The ‘Small Design Pilot Project’ is part of the Sejong University Campus Project, where local university students and residents identify local issues and solve them design-wise by utilizing local resources.
The Campus Town Project is a program that induces youth job creation and regional coexistence through university resources, public support, and cooperation with the local community.
The district selected 8 teams as ‘2020 Student Village Designers’ to carry out the project, and from July to November, over five months, they gathered residents’ opinions and derived design projects reflecting local characteristics.
They held four workshops, three consultations and mentoring sessions with related experts, and coordinated with community centers and relevant departments, ultimately producing and installing works from six teams.
The proposed projects include improving aging alleyway walls, repairing mini fire stations, installing screens to protect residents’ privacy, and improving illegal dumping of garbage.
In the future, the results of the ‘Small Design Pilot Project’ will be shared at the ‘2020 Student Village Designer Performance Sharing Meeting,’ where outstanding teams will be awarded.
Kim Seon-gap, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “It was a good opportunity for students to take an active role by implementing improvements to local problems around the school together with residents,” and added, “We will continue to strive to promote projects where excellent human resources from universities in Gwangjin-gu and the local community can coexist, such as the Small Design Pilot Project.”
