[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction announced on the 27th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd. to promote domestic offshore wind power.
Through this agreement, the two companies will cooperate on offshore wind power projects with a capacity of 2GW in regions such as Gyeongin, the southwestern sea, and Jeju, which are being developed by Korea South-East Power, as well as collaborate on the construction of MW-class floating offshore wind power systems and complexes.
They will also expand technology exchanges for the commercialization of the 8MW large-capacity offshore wind power generation project, which Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is leading as the main institution for a national project.
Korea South-East Power holds the largest number of project plans in terms of scale among domestic offshore wind power operators. In 2013, it completed the Yeongheung Wind Power Complex, the first domestically commercialized wind power complex in Korea, where Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction supplied 10 wind turbines (30MW).
Additionally, in 2017, Korea South-East Power, together with Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, completed the Tamna Offshore Wind Power Complex, the first commercial offshore wind power complex in Korea using domestic technology, leading the revitalization of the domestic wind power industry.
Park In-won, Head of the Plant Design, Construction, and Procurement (EPC) Business Group (BG) at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, said, "Through this MOU, we can expect commercialization by securing large-scale achievements of domestically produced offshore wind turbines," adding, "We will work with Korea South-East Power to revitalize the domestic wind power industry ecosystem in line with the government's Green New Deal policy."
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction developed the first 3MW-class offshore wind turbine in Korea in 2011 and obtained international certification. Last year, it also acquired international certification for a 5.5MW-class offshore wind power system.
Furthermore, it plans to commercialize the largest domestic capacity 8MW-class offshore wind power system in 2022. This product will maximize blade length to improve efficiency and will be differentiated to be optimized for domestic wind conditions.
