[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) is participating in the World Health Organization (WHO)'s evaluation of the quality certification (PQ) for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines.

At a regular briefing on the afternoon of the 22nd, Park Neung-hoo, the first deputy head of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, stated, "The MFDS will participate as an assessor in the quality certification evaluation of COVID-19 vaccines to be supplied through the multinational coalition 'COVAX Facility' for equitable vaccine distribution." The MFDS has been involved in WHO's quality certification since 2012, having been recognized for its regulatory capabilities in the vaccine sector.

Quality certification is a system by which the WHO evaluates the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines supplied to developing countries through international procurement. Medicines must obtain quality certification to participate in international procurement bidding. COVID-19 vaccines supplied through the COVAX Facility must also receive WHO quality certification to be distributed.
