[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Shinsegae Department Store's rooftop garden becomes a popular urban outing spot for the year-end season.

Starting with the Gangnam branch on the 27th, Shinsegae Department Store will decorate the rooftop spaces of the Gyeonggi branch, Times Square branch, Daegu Shinsegae, and Gwangju Shinsegae with diverse content.

First, Shinsegae Gangnam branch will transform the 11th floor S Garden into a fairy-tale Christmas world under the theme "Starlight in the Snow Garden" until January. Large Christmas trees, mirror balls, and star lights creating a Christmas atmosphere will be placed throughout the garden. The central pond will be enhanced with sparkling lights to evoke the Milky Way.

Shinsegae Gyeonggi branch and Gwangju Shinsegae have prepared to let visitors feel the year-end spirit by decorating the 10th floor rooftop garden and 1st floor cultural plaza as "Santa Village" and "White Village" until December.

In Santa Village, a model house where Santa lives will welcome child customers. Cute Christmas ornaments will also be sold to stimulate the childhood imagination of visitors. White Village will be decorated as a winter fantasy world with Christmas trees made of birch trees, snow-covered cabins, and white-furred polar bears.

Shinsegae has been creating urban resorts throughout its department stores with various concepts. In September, the Gangnam branch filled its rooftop garden with pink muhly grass, becoming a famous spot for taking photos on social networking services (SNS).

The Centum City branch introduced the Juraji Theme Park in a 3,305㎡ (about 1,000 pyeong) space, offering customers differentiated memories and entertainment. It was the first retail facility in Korea to allocate about 35% of the total area for family and couple customers, breaking the traditional notion of "department store = shopping space."

Daegu Shinsegae, opened in December 2016, decorated its entire rooftop of 6,610㎡ (about 2,000 pyeong) as a family theme park and introduced the department store's first aquarium of 5,289㎡ (about 1,600 pyeong) on the top floor.

Yoo Sin-yeol, Vice President and Head of Sales at Shinsegae Department Store, said, "The department store rooftop is becoming a popular urban spot for customers tired of daily life," adding, "We will continue to present unique content while ensuring a safe shopping environment."
