Space Sci-Fi Movie 'Seungriho' Heads to Netflix (Summary)

"The boundary between the existing environment of content distribution and digital is gradually breaking down"

Space Sci-Fi Movie 'Seungriho' Heads to Netflix (Summary)

Director Jo Sung-hee's film Seungriho will be streamed on Netflix.

Netflix announced on the 20th that it will exclusively release the film, though the release date has not been disclosed. Seungriho is a space sci-fi movie with a production budget of 24 billion won. Originally intended for theatrical release, its premiere was repeatedly postponed due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Yoo Jeong-hoon, CEO of Merry Christmas who handled investment and distribution, explained the background of the deal: “We could not ignore the global widespread impact of COVID-19. The boundary between traditional content distribution and digital platforms is gradually dissolving.” He added, “We judged that we could no longer delay the release if we wanted to accelerate the expansion of the super IP and build a foundation to increase the chances of success in the global market.”

Seungriho was created with the intention of expanding its IP into various content such as a series of films, spin-off videos, webtoons, and games based on a specific universe. Set in 2092, it tells the story of the crew of the space junk cleaning ship Seungriho who discover Dorothy, a humanoid robot known as a lethal weapon, and get involved in a dangerous deal. The cast includes Kim Tae-ri, Song Joong-ki, Jin Seon-kyu, and Yoo Hae-jin.
