New Urban Art Platform 'Urbanbreak Art Asia' Opens at COEX on the 12th
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The works of Banksy, a street artist gaining attention for his groundbreaking actions, will be exhibited in Korea for the first time.
The Urban Break Art Asia Organizing Committee announced on the 9th that Banksy's special exhibition will be held for the first time in Korea at 'Urban Break Art Asia,' which takes place from the 12th to the 15th at COEX. The special exhibition will showcase works such as 'Queen Victoria' and 'Flower Thrower.'
Banksy became famous in October 2018 at a Sotheby's auction in London, UK, for his painting 'Girl with Balloon,' which sold for ?1.04 million (approximately 1.5 billion KRW). At that time, the 'Girl with Balloon' piece was shredded by a shredder installed inside the frame immediately after the sale. Banksy later revealed that he had intentionally shredded the painting, and this incident made him a globally recognized artist. At the end of last month, at a Sotheby's auction in London, Banksy's reinterpretation of 'Water Lilies,' one of the representative works of French Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840?1926), was sold for ?7,751,600 (approximately 11.2 billion KRW).
Recently, as outdoor activities became difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Banksy created works using rats, toilet paper, and trash inside his home, delivering a message of the times and once again attracting attention. He is also a film director who debuted with the 2010 documentary film 'Exit Through the Gift Shop.' 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2011.
Urban Break, where Banksy's special exhibition is held, is a new exhibition platform based on urban-born art culture such as graffiti. Urban Break aims to be an art platform encompassing all art genres unfolding in the new exhibition space called 'city.'
Jang Won-cheol, chairman of the Urban Break Art Asia organizing committee, stated that through this exhibition, they will introduce new trends in urban art, which takes place on city buildings and street walls, and present new directions for contemporary art.
This year's event will feature about 500 works by approximately 150 domestic and international artists, including John Burgerman, Mr. Doodle, Jayflow, Spiv, Widget, and Rockhwa, across about 70 booths. In addition, visitors can experience a collaborative platform created together with street artists, creators, and various galleries.
This exhibition requires advance reservation through Naver Melon to attend.
