[AKYUNG Poll] Seoul Citizens' Political Support Rate for President Moon 50.8%... Non-Support 46.2%

[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] The 'political' approval rating of President Moon Jae-in among Seoul citizens was found to slightly surpass the disapproval rating within the margin of error.

According to a public opinion survey conducted by Win-Gi Korea Consulting on behalf of Asia Economy from the 1st to 2nd of this month, targeting 1,000 Seoul citizens (100% mobile phone, automated response), 50.8% responded that they politically support President Moon, while 46.2% said they do not support him. The gap between approval and disapproval ratings was 4.6 percentage points, which is within the margin of error.

This result reflects political identity rather than a 'job performance evaluation' influenced by short-term government issues, and Win-Gi Korea explained that it can be used to gauge voting tendencies in upcoming by-elections and presidential elections.

By region, except for the so-called Southeast area including the Gangnam 3 districts (Gangnam, Gangdong, Seocho, Songpa), approval ratings exceeded disapproval ratings in all other areas. Specifically, the Northwest area showed the highest approval rating at 58.5%, followed by the Central area (54.1%), Northeast area (52.4%), and Southwest area (51.2%). The Southeast area recorded an approval rating of 42.5%, failing to surpass the 50% mark. This appears to reflect the traditionally weak base of the ruling party in that area and the government's and ruling party's implementation of strong real estate measures targeting high-priced apartments.

By gender and age, there were distinct differences in approval ratings. Among those in their 20s, 69.2% of women expressed support for President Moon, whereas only 26.3% of men in their 20s supported him. Among those aged 70 and above, 45.4% of men supported him, but only 20.4% of women in the same age group showed support.

Additionally, 60.3% of women in their 30s supported President Moon, while 49.3% of men in their 30s expressed support. In their 40s, approval ratings were similar between women and men at 62.2% and 68.8%, respectively. Among those in their 50s, 42.4% of women and 57.4% of men supported President Moon, and in their 60s, 46.7% of women and 50.4% of men showed support.

By political party support, 94.2% of supporters of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea responded that they support President Moon, and 89.0% of Open Democratic Party supporters also expressed support. Conversely, 92.3% of People Power Party supporters responded that they do not support him, and 89.1% of People Party supporters also did not support President Moon. Among Justice Party supporters, 53.8% supported President Moon, but the disapproval rate was relatively high at 40.7%.

Summarizing by progressive and conservative parties, 87.4% of progressive party supporters supported President Moon, while 91.5% of conservative party supporters expressed disapproval, clearly showing a division along ideological lines.

This survey was conducted among men and women aged 18 and over residing in Seoul, with an overall response rate of 8.07%, totaling 1,000 respondents. The sample was extracted with weighted values by gender, age, and region (cell weighting). The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
