Gangbuk-gu Awarded Commissioner of Police Commendation at the 5th Korea Crime Prevention Awards

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Park Gyeom-su, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, received the Commissioner of the National Police Agency Commendation at the ‘5th Korea Crime Prevention Awards 2020’ held at Hoam Art Hall on the 28th.

The Korea Crime Prevention Awards are given to public institutions, organizations, and companies that have made efforts to prevent crime in local communities. This award was given in recognition of excellent evaluations in the field of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), such as ‘building bright and safe urban environments’ and ‘creating safe residential spaces.’

He was recognized for his contribution in implementing a bright and safe walking environment in crime-vulnerable areas within the district, thereby increasing residents’ perceived safety.

So far, the district has taken the lead in crime prevention through urban environment improvement. Existing security lights were replaced with eco-friendly LEDs to create alleys where residents can walk safely even at night. ‘Smart security lights’ equipped with black boxes and ‘logoprojectors’ that project police car images onto the ground have played a key role as guardians protecting the safety of the residents.

In the ‘safe residential space creation’ plan, solutions were proposed from the building permit stage. The district set conditions for approval of residential buildings, including installation of security windows, gas pipe protection facilities, and unmanned parcel lockers. In particular, mandatory installation of locks on shared entrance doors was highlighted as a notable contribution to everyday crime prevention.

Park Gyeom-su, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, “It is very meaningful that our efforts to create a city safe from crime have been recognized externally. We will work in various ways to improve residential environments through expanded crime prevention design and to establish a dense safety city network.”
