[Asia Economy Reporter Joeslgina] There are reports that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold3 may be equipped with a pop-up camera.
On the 27th, according to SamMobile, Samsung Electronics recently registered a smartphone patent featuring a pop-up camera on a foldable phone with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
SamMobile described it as a "quite detailed sketch" and suggested that "Samsung is considering equipping the Galaxy Z Fold3 with a pop-up camera, or may have pushed for this on the Galaxy Z Fold2 but abandoned it." The patent was submitted last April, before the release of the Galaxy Z Fold2, and was confirmed to be registered on the 22nd of this month.
Looking at the registered sketches, one can clearly see a pop-up camera equipped design that folds the screen left and right like the Galaxy Z Fold2. The designs include a selfie front camera implemented as a pop-up camera, and a design where all six cameras on the front and back are pop-up cameras.
If a pop-up camera is installed, there is no need to adopt a punch-hole or notch design. However, SamMobile noted that in this case, the design of the foldable phone would become more complex. For the Galaxy Z Fold2, although some improvements were made to the complicated hinge of the previous model, durability is still considered lacking. There are concerns that adding pop-up components could make it more vulnerable to damage and water resistance issues. An increase in device price is also expected to be inevitable.
