[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha acknowledged that some expressions in Ambassador Lee Soo-hyuk's remarks on the ROK-US alliance, which sparked controversy, were problematic and stated that necessary measures would be taken.

On the 26th, during the National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee's audit, Kang responded to Rep. Lee Tae-gyu's question on whether Ambassador Lee's remarks on the ROK-US alliance aligned with government policy by saying, "I think some expressions were problematic," and added, "We are taking measures on the necessary parts."

Regarding Rep. Jung Jin-juk's question about whether any cautionary measures had been taken against the ambassador, Kang said, "No measures have been taken yet, but we are thoroughly reviewing the ambassador's remarks and will take necessary actions," adding, "I believe the situation requires action."

On the 12th, Ambassador Lee appeared at the audit of the Korean Embassy in the US and stated, "We must be able to love the United States in the future; only then can choosing the US be in the national interest," and argued, "Continuing the ROK-US alliance just because it was formed 70 years ago without love is an insult to the United States." Following these remarks, criticism arose both inside and outside the government that he was not suitable as ambassador to the US.

Meanwhile, Minister Kang responded to the delayed visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo by saying, "I do not think it is being bypassed," and added, "I cannot agree with the expression that the ROK-US alliance is drifting." Regarding plans for a visit to the US next month, she said, "Regardless of the US presidential election outcome, the Trump administration will remain until the end of January next year."
