[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The term of Kim Jong-yang, President of the International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO·Interpol), which was set to end at the end of this year, will be extended by one more year.

On the 22nd, the National Police Agency announced that Interpol decided to postpone this year's general assembly in consideration of the COVID-19 situation.

The Interpol General Assembly was originally scheduled to be held on December 7-8 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Interpol General Assembly is attended annually by the top security officials from 194 member countries worldwide to decide on overall Interpol operations, including organization, budget, and leadership elections.

However, at the Interpol virtual Executive Committee meeting held the day before, it was decided not to hold this year's general assembly in consideration of the global health crisis caused by COVID-19. Next year's general assembly is scheduled to be held in Turkey.

With the postponement of the general assembly, President Kim's term has also been extended until next year. Since being elected as Interpol President in November 2018, President Kim has been striving for "a safer world."
