[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor You Deok-yeol) decided the 2021 Dongdaemun-gu living wage at 10,702 KRW per hour through the Living Wage Deliberation Committee meeting held on the 20th.

This amount is 179 KRW (1.7%) higher than the 2020 living wage of 10,523 KRW.

The living wage is a wage system calculated comprehensively considering housing costs, education expenses, cultural expenses, medical expenses, etc., to supplement the institutional shortcomings of the minimum wage and to enable workers to maintain at least a minimum decent life.

The district actively adopted Seoul City's model, which reflects housing costs, private education expenses, and inflation rate based on the median household expenditure of a three-person household, and finalized the 2021 living wage amount.

The 2021 Dongdaemun-gu living wage of 10,702 KRW is 1,982 KRW (22.7%) higher than next year's minimum wage of 8,720 KRW, and when converted based on the statutory working hours of 209 hours per month, it amounts to 2,236,720 KRW per month, which is 414,240 KRW more than the minimum wage of 1,822,480 KRW.

The living wage confirmed this time is expected to be applied from January 1, 2021, to about 184 fixed-term workers belonging to Dongdaemun-gu and Dongdaemun-gu Facilities Management Corporation.

You Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “We will gradually improve the living wage for low-wage workers working in Dongdaemun-gu and continuously find ways to provide practical help.”
