[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The police have applied for a pre-arrest warrant against a monk who demanded sexual acts from his stepdaughter obtained through remarriage.
On the 20th, the Gangseo Police Station in Seoul announced that they applied for a pre-arrest warrant against Mr. A (69) on four charges including quasi-rape and attempted rape under the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse.
According to the police, Mr. A, a married monk (a monk who is married and has a family), is accused of continuing sexual abuse about 10 times, including forcible molestation, over approximately four years from 2017, when Ms. C, the daughter of his remarried wife Ms. B, was in elementary school, until this year.
This crime by Mr. A came to light after Ms. C disclosed the facts through counseling at the middle school she was attending, and the related facts were reported to a child protection agency, which then reported to the police earlier this month.
During the police investigation, Ms. C reportedly stated that she endured the sexual abuse because she feared that refusing it would cause financial difficulties for the household.
Mr. A, who has appointed a lawyer, completely denies the charges. A pretrial detention hearing for Mr. A is scheduled to be held at the Seoul Southern District Court on the 22nd.
A police official stated, "This is currently under investigation," and added, "We cannot disclose specific details."
