Estimated 2 Million iPhone 12 Units Sold on First Day... Previous Model About 800,000
9 Million Units Pre-Ordered in 3 Days for 2 Models... 11 Had 12 Million
'iPhone 12 Pro' Popular in China... Accounts for 40% of Sales
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The first-day pre-order sales of the iPhone 12 have been revealed to be more than twice that of the iPhone 11.
On the 19th (local time), Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple specialist analyst at KGI Securities, stated that the first-day order volume for the iPhone 12 was between 1.7 million and 2 million units, significantly surpassing the 800,000 units sold for the iPhone 11.
It is expected that the sales volume of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will reach 9 million units over the three days starting from the 16th, when pre-orders began. Although this is less than the 12 million units sold for the iPhone 11 series, considering that two models have yet to be released, it is difficult to say the sales are lagging. The iPhone 12 Mini and Pro Max models are scheduled for release in November.
In the case of the iPhone 12 Pro, despite having better camera specifications and being priced 100,000 KRW higher, it achieved favorable sales performance thanks to strong demand in China. Ming-Chi Kuo stated, "Sales of the iPhone 12 Pro model in China account for 35-45%." The iPhone 12 Pro is equipped with a telephoto lens and LiDAR scanner, offers larger storage capacity (512GB), and supports night mode even in portrait photography.
Demand for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro is similar, but the Pro model's demand has been higher than initially expected. Ming-Chi Kuo projected the sales distribution of the iPhone 12 series as follows: ▲iPhone 12 Mini 10-15% ▲iPhone 12 30-35% ▲iPhone 12 Pro 30-35% ▲iPhone 12 Pro Max 15-20%.
Ming-Chi Kuo analyzed, "Chinese users prefer large screens, and since the iPhone 12 Mini does not support dual SIM, its sales are expected to be weak. Demand for the iPhone 12 Mini and Pro Max will be lower than that for the iPhone 12 and Pro models."
There are forecasts that Apple will lead a 5G 'super cycle' that significantly increases sales by launching its first 5G iPhone. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives predicted, "Among the 1 billion iPhone users, 350 million will upgrade to 5G iPhones."
With Huawei's smartphone shipments expected to sharply decline due to U.S. government export restrictions, Apple is anticipated to greatly increase its market share in China. Market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA) projected that among the 670 million 5G smartphones shipped in 2021, Apple will ship 180 million units, securing the number one market share.
Meanwhile, the domestic prices for the iPhone 12 are ▲iPhone 12 Mini 950,000 KRW ▲iPhone 12 1,090,000 KRW ▲iPhone 12 Pro 1,350,000 KRW ▲iPhone 12 Pro Max 1,490,000 KRW and up. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will officially launch in Korea on the 30th of this month, with pre-orders starting on the 23rd. The iPhone 12 Mini and Pro Max are scheduled to be released in the U.S. and other countries starting November 6, with the domestic release date yet to be determined.
