Just this year, Korean GM's 'Trailblazer' and Renault Samsung Motors' 'XM3' were launched, driving brand sales. Hyundai Motor Company has the 'Kona.' The Kona has returned as the 'The New Kona' after three years. And this time, it comes with Hyundai's first SUV 'N Line' model. Driving the 'Kona N Line' myself felt like meeting a 'stylish athlete' rather than just a 'small but solid car.' I experienced the enhanced athletic performance of the Kona N Line while driving from Ilsan to Yangju.

-Design Evolved to Be More Dynamic

To talk about the Kona N Line's design, we must first mention The New Kona, as the N Line incorporates points from The New Kona's basic design. This model applies Hyundai's recent design trend called 'Sensuous Sportiness.' The existing Kona is characterized by unique proportions with a low and wide stance. The New Kona's radiator grille design extends toward the headlamps, making it look wider and more agile.

The N Line adds sportiness to this. The front design emphasizes the N Line's distinctive radiator grille and air curtains, highlighting a high-performance image. Additionally, black color accents on the LED headlamp bezels enhance a sophisticated atmosphere. The model also features exclusive diamond-cut wheels for the N Line.

The interior layout is the same for both The New Kona and Kona N Line. The center fascia emphasizes horizontal lines, visually creating a more spacious feel. However, the refined red accents and N Line logos decorating the interior emphasize its high-performance model status.

The 1.6 turbo engine shared with The New Kona boasts a maximum output of 198 horsepower and maximum torque of 27.0 kgf·m, an increase of over 20 horsepower compared to the previous model. Additionally, the N Line model features suspension and steering tuned for driving performance.

Starting the engine and setting off, it was immediately clear this is a high-performance vehicle. The increased output compared to the previous model delivers an exhilarating acceleration even with slight pressure on the accelerator. This feeling is stronger in sport mode, but normal mode still provides ample speed enjoyment for everyday driving.

The most satisfying aspect was the vehicle's control. Especially during cornering, the car maintained its center and moved stably in the driver's intended direction, which was impressive. If you encounter moments where braking is difficult on sharp corners, I recommend trusting the vehicle and focusing on steering until the end. Even at relatively high speeds, the Kona N Line demonstrates reliable performance. Furthermore, reinforced inner soundproofing and improved wind noise maintain high quietness at high speeds. With driving performance and quietness guaranteed, comfort is ensured even during high-speed driving.

Fuel efficiency improved by 8.6% compared to the previous Kona, achieving 13.9 km per liter (2WD, 16-inch wheel combined fuel efficiency standard). During normal mode driving, it recorded 14.2 km per liter, and in sport mode, 13.1 km per liter. Considering the test involved repeated sudden stops and starts and somewhat aggressive driving, this is a respectable performance. Also, although it is a high-performance model, most parts are compatible with the standard model, making vehicle maintenance costs low, which is another advantage.

Overall, the Kona N Line seems to be a vehicle aimed at young people in their 20s and 30s. It excels in design and performance while also being economical. Although the compact SUV size has limitations, it is sufficient if you have young children, and as an SUV, it offers more spaciousness compared to other N Line models.
